Can't find antiquing medium anymore? Try Jo Sonja's antiquing medium and retarder. Add equal amounts of acrylic paint and retarder. Most antiquing mediums are burnt umber based but when you make your own you can use any color paint you like.

Gesso produces a smooth, velvet matte surface while provoding maximum tooth and can be sanded between coats to produce a smooth surface. Soap and water clean up. Not for use with any oil-based products. Perfect for recoating a piece you want to paint over again!

One step crackle process can be used before or after painting design. The amount of application will determine the size of cracks. Apply one to three coats of color. Then apply one coat of Crackle Medium in a slip slap fashion and quickly blend out brush strokes. Allow to air dry. Antique or glaze to enhance crackle pattern with a contrasting color thinned with retarder. Crackle pattern will be fine.

Antiquing Mixture Recipe: Equal parts paint to Retarder and add 3 drops of Rich Gold. Stir. If antiquing is too loose add more paint. Too stiff, add more Retarder. May be stored in an airtight container indefinitely. Remember the old Pecan Sparkle Antique? This is the waterbased acrylic version.
